((This is my first post in about 6 months don’t expect anything grand ^^; ))
The mist hung down low over the island barely letting the weak rays of the rising sun touch the earth. A small herd of water buffalo waded calmly through mucky edges of the shore, uprooting their morning meal from the soil and lazily chewing on it. Birds flew overhead singing their soft calls from afar as if calling the sun to come forth from the edges of the earth. In the grass there sat a large sandy shape. A lioness lay quietly waiting, watching. Her green eyes and murderous claws threatened to shatter the peace of the sunrise. She laid still, only her ears flicked when an annoying fly decided to bite it. Her sights were fixed on an injured buffalo calf. It had a bad limp and kept falling over as it tried to make its way through the watery grasses, calling pitifully for its mother to come to his aid. The calf was falling far behind the safety of his herd. This was Kala’s chance. Although hunting a buffalo alone was risky the lioness had much experience and she was hungry. She was willing to take the chance. Her muscles rippled as she slowly slunk forward toward the helpless calf. She paused to think for a moment as she reached the edges of the grass. Then, quick as lightning, Kala burst from her hiding spot full speed and leapt onto the terrified calf. The weight of her body brought the calf to the earth as it let out a horrid wail. The calf struggled frantically and Kala had to carefully dodge blows from its flailing hoofs. Finally she got a hold on the neck and sunk her teeth in. Although the calf was still alive, its cries ceased as it slowly started to suffocate. Victory seemed at hand but Kala’s triumph was short lived. Seemingly coming out of nowhere the calf’s heroic mother stormed toward the lioness. Without a second thought Kala released her hold and snarled viciously before slinking back into the safety of the grass. But she would be back. She knew the calf couldn’t survive long with the added injuries she had inflicted upon it. She padded softly to the shade of a tree where she lay down to wait.
